Welcome to the Portuguese Open

This year’s Portuguese Open, a classic and another ”sunshine, beach and family” event will take place for the 16th time at the Riviera Hotel**** in Carcavelos with shops, restaurants, cafés and the beach nearby.

 

The schedule will allow vacation on the beach, social dinners with friends, daily Chouette action by the pool and sightseeing trips in the morning.

 Various side-events will be lined up and we´ll have”farewell”-drinks on the beach after the awards ceremony on the last official day.

 

Come and enjoy the excellent food and wines, the warm sunshine, the sandy beaches and the inexpensive and lavish lifestyle, and enjoy the relaxing ”backgammon holidays” among friends and with your family.


Make sure to reserve your room quickly since the hotel is always quickly sold out in the summer.

EVENTS & FEES

 

  • ”Welcome Portugal Warm-up” (limited to 32 players, first come, first served): 25 € fee / 5 point matches, Single Elimination, clock preference, First Prize: exclusive backgammon board.

 

  • PORTUGUESE MASTERS (Elite): 440 € entry + 80 € registration + 10 € cocktail mandatory / optional side-pool 150 € (95% return) / 9 points matches, T-Swiss Format (3 lives), clock mandatory


Registrations for the PORTUGUESE MASTERS must be made via email (info@world-backgammon-association.com), before 1st May 2024. DISCOUNTED FEE:  Registrations (before 1st May 2024) 20 € reduction.

 

  • PORTUGUESE MASTERS (Leisure): 80 € entry + 20 € registration + 10 € cocktail mandatory, match length and format to be defined, depending on the number of entries.

 

SIDE-EVENTS:

 

  • Doubles (max 16 teams): 300 € per team (85% return), 7 points, single elimination, clock mandatory

 

  • SpeedGammon: 50 € (85% return), re-entries allowed, 5 points, time setting: 2 min. total bank time + 10 sec. delay

 

  • Bogidar Super-Speed: 25 € (85% return), re-entries allowed, 5 points, time setting: 30 sec. total bank time + 8 sec. delay

 

  • DMP-Challenge: 10 € (85% return), multiple entries allowed​

 

  • Mini-Jackpots (4 players): 25 €, 50 €, 100 € available during all days

Hotel & Reservation

The Hotel Riviera is situated in a privileged area very close to Carcavelos Beach – considered to be the best of the various beaches in the area - and centrally located in relation both to Lisbon city and other places of great historic interest such as Cascais and Sintra. A prestigious hotel, whose opening marks a new era of modern tourism, built in a privileged area, close to the magnificent Carcavelos Beach, on the Estoril Coast, 5 km from Cascais and 20 km from Lisbon.

Please make your reservation quickly and mention ”backgammon” upon booking. Rooms at the backgammon rate are limited and requests after filling the quota or passing the cut-off date (1st May 2024) will be accepted on a space-and-rate available basis.

Average temperatures in Carcavelos in June: 24°C and sunny !!!

Only cash payments in €uro will be accepted.

The WBA tournament rules will apply.

This event is by invitation only, thus the tournament committee and directors reserve the right to refuse application or admittance without giving due reason.

The usage of official tournament precision dice is mandatory. Clocks are mandatory in Elite Group, Doubles and SpeedGammon matches.
Tournament trophies will be presented during the awards ceremony only.
Leaving the tournament room without informing the Tournament Director and/or staff might result in penalty points and forfeit.

The Tournament Directors reserve the right to change the program during the event.

The Tournament Director’s ruling is final, unless over-ruled by the Ruling Committee.
